Off to the Sony forum to see what the RX100III does (as I think it offers 4:3). This got me thinking that if the LX8 shares the 1" sensor with the FZ1000, I might not upgrade when the LX8 arrives because I'd lose RAW cropping to 4:3, but now it seems that this is not the case. The only reason I hadn't taken note of even the issue earlier is that I virtually always shoot in 4:3 aspect ratio and all my cameras have 4:3 sensors. So cropping the RAW image would matter a great deal to me. I, for example, like to compose in the viewfinder so I don't have to guess how a crop might look later in post processing, and I like to shoot RAW. But now I have two responses here saying it isn't the case, that cameras can and do crop RAW images right out of the camera. In a thread on a different post I read that RAW files tend to include all data that hits the exposed sensor and then went to the only camera I have with me this summer, an old Panasonic G1, and found that the aspect ratio selection in the menu is grayed out when the camera is set to RAW (or so I think that's what I saw) this tended to confirm what that other thread said. I photographed this Black-crowned Night Heron this morning at 1:1 and the RAW file shows 1:1 I don't find that to be so with the FZ1000. Scientific Calculator Financial Calculator Multipurpose Calculator Calculator Compute Calculate Percentage.Though it took me a while to figure this out, it seems that shooting RAW on most cameras ignores (or prevents) aspect ratio settings and produces an image with the native aspect ratio of the sensor.
